How to Check Car Oil

oil change

To keep your vehicle running smoothly, having the proper amount of motor oil is a must. That is why it is important that you know how to check car oil. The service experts at Butler Auto Group have compiled this helpful guide so you can complete this task in no time.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Before you begin the process, you will want to take a look at your owner’s manual. If you drive a newer vehicle, there is a chance that your vehicle is outfitted with an electronic oil monitor that replaces the traditional dipstick. If you have to check the oil manually, take a look at the simple steps below:

  1. Park the car on level ground so that it stays securely in place. The vehicle should be turned off, and the engine should have enough time to cool before you begin.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood to locate the dipstick.
  3. Take out the dipstick, and clean off any oil on it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

If the oil level falls within the markings that designate the proper amount, you are all set to hit the road once again. If it does not, you will need to add more oil.

If you need more oil, once again take a look at your owner’s manual to see what grade of oil is recommended for your particular make and model. When you have the right type of oil, take off the oil filler cap, then add oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the proper level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

If you want your vehicle to perform at its best, you need to make sure the motor oil is filled properly and is not contaminated with dirt and debris. Your vehicle should have an oil change at least twice a year, but you may need to do so more often depending on your driving habits. It is a good idea to check the oil once a month. When you do this, you can spot oil leaks early before they turn into a bigger problem. If you start to notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or steam is billowing out from under the hood, you will need to set up an appointment with a professional.
